What It Takes To Be A Successful Female Entrepreneur Who Is Also A Mother: Characteristics, Challenges, And Advice

Author : Dr. Natasha Weems, DNP-BC

I was a mother before I became an entrepreneur, but like many was prepared to tackle diversity and inclusion and be the representation for many women in my community that felt discouraged or misled by social media. Entrepreneurship has paved the way for numerous opportunities and I’m excited to embark on this journey.
For some, the hardships of motherhood inspire the creation of their businesses, while for others, the freedom afforded by being your own boss has been essential in balancing a profession and a family.

Many individuals who become entrepreneurs believe that their experiences as parents or life experiences have equipped them with the skills and abilities they need to succeed in business. Being a parent requires strong leadership skills, multitasking abilities, and the ability to handle a wide range of tasks, all of which are valuable in entrepreneurship.

Growing up in Detroit’s inner city years ago, I had to deal with generational curses. Sometimes, life presents many economic challenges to individuals seeking financial stability. One of the biggest challenges is finding stable employment with a decent salary.
Despite these challenges, many people dream of achieving financial stability in their careers. This typically involves having a steady source of income, paying off debt, saving for the future, and investing in assets that will appreciate over time.
Financial stability can bring a sense of peace and security, allowing individuals to focus on their personal and professional goals without worrying about financial stress. It also provides the foundation for pursuing other dreams, such as starting a business, traveling, or giving back to the community.

“Women are powerful and resilient, I will never quit! I’ve taken my challenges over the years as an opportunity to inspire and allowed myself grace to grow from my pain and from my mistakes.”

Dr. Natasha Weems, DNP,  AGPCNP-BC the owner of Care First Wellness Med Spa, share a vital piece of advice with all of you: that you all need to be your own biggest cheerleader.

Growing up, I watched my parents work tirelessly to provide best for the family. So, from the beginning, I was determined to make the most of the opportunities they had given me. My sole concentration was to work hard and realize my childhood desire to pursue a medical practice.
Despite the challenges which I faced along the way, I remained focused on my goals and worked hard to achieve success. I developed strong time management skills, honed my professional skills, and built a strong network of mentors and supporters.
While progressing exceptionally in my career, I was proud of the achievements that I had accomplished and the positive impact I was making in my community. I remained grateful to my parents for instilling in me a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed and I was committed to pay it forward by mentoring and supporting others in their own careers.
As a woman in business, it was hard to find my voice. I struggled to find a balance between career and motherhood. Being a parent is a full-time job, but unlike any other, it is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week gig! There are no breaks, paid vacations, or sick days, yet it provides the best perks. Life isn’t a bed of roses but presence of your loved ones make it worthy for you!

So, how can we balance motherhood with other elements of our lives such as pursuing our aspirations, having a career, or being an entrepreneur? Let’s See!

1. Manage your Expectations

It’s okay to be excited after you’ve passed the interview and read all the relevant success stories on the internet. Still, don’t forget that everyone struggles initially, so be ready to make mistakes and learn.

2. Trust your Decision

Whether it was perks, location, or status, you made the decision for a reason, so trust your judgment. Again, beginnings are difficult. Just remain consistent towards your aims and you will achieve them one day!

3. Don’t Compare!

“Comparison is the thief of joy and time,” so don’t waste it worrying about what other people are doing. It is none of your concern, so use your time to focus on the well-being of yourself and your family, since in the end, we are all doing our best for our own (behind closed doors we struggle, we cry, we juggle a thousand tasks but we overcome barriers and continue our journey of being Boss Mother’s and Boss women)
Time management, stress reduction, and increased production are all benefits of management. As a mother, I accomplish this by planning ahead of time and developing a pattern that works for my family.

4. Lose The Guilt and Remain Focused!

As mothers attempting to maintain our own identities while nurturing our children, we will always make sacrifices. Knowing your “why” and determining which compromises are worthwhile are critical stages in reducing “the guilt.”

Natasha’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination in achieving success. Her dedication and drive serve as an inspiration to others who are striving to reach their own goals and make their dreams a reality.
